Licenses and Contracts
As a software engineer familiar to working with standards, I expected that standard commercial software licenses and independent contractor agreements would exist. They don’t. I didn’t want to hire a lawyer familiar with software to write these for me, and I didn’t want to create my own from scratch.
After looking around and leveraging Amazon’s “Inside This Book” feature, I settled on Web & Software Development from Nolo Press. I’ve only read those chapters that I need (independent contractor agreements and software licenses), but both of these chapters have been clear, concise, and thorough. I especially appreciate how they provide various options that can be included or excluded to customize the agreements.
To clarify my above statement, there are plenty of standard open source software licenses. Perhaps the easiest licenses to understand and create are the Creative Commons licenses. Check out their new tool for creating licenses.
